Preparation for the examination
General
- The test should always be performed as directed by the doctor.
- Approximately 30 minutes before the examination, it is recommended to drink 1 glass of water only.
- The patient should have with him/her a preparation containing iron (e.g. Ascofer)
necessary to perform the test. - The material for testing is blood.
- A few days before the test, you should not take any preparations containing iron, and on the day before the test, you should refrain from eating foods rich in iron (e.g. liver, spinach, red meat).
- The patient must fast for at least 12 hours after consuming the last meal, unless the doctor recommends otherwise (e.g. performing the test after a meal)
- You should not drink coffee, flavored water, drinks such as cola light/cola “zero”, energy drinks, or juices.
- You should not eat meals, snacks, fruits, vegetables, breath fresheners, chew gum, or smoke cigarettes.
- The patient cannot eat any food during the test.
- You must remain in place throughout the examination.
- The standard test protocol:
Blood collection 1 – on an empty stomach.
After blood collection, the patient takes 6 tablets (unless otherwise directed by the doctor) of an iron preparation (e.g., Ascofer). The preparation can be taken with water and lemon juice; its acidic nature aids iron absorption.
Blood is then collected at intervals prescribed by the doctor. - Some people may experience a reaction in the form of diarrhea after taking an iron preparation; this should be reported to the person performing the test, who will record this information on the referral to the laboratory.

- Women should take the test at least 3 days after their period.

- For children up to 3 years of age, it is recommended to collect blood half to one hour after feeding.

A referral from a physician is required for the test, specifying the dose and name of the iron preparation to be administered.

Description
Iron is a component of enzymes and hemoglobin. It is stored in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow as ferritin. It participates in the transport of oxygen to cells.
The importance of this test: when iron deficiency or malabsorption is suspected, and to calculate transferrin saturation.
Abnormal iron values: in cases of chronic blood loss, heavy menstruation, gastrointestinal pathologies (absorption disorders),
during pregnancy, breastfeeding, stress,
infections, inflammation, cancer, and kidney disease.
