Description
Prolactin is released from the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Its secretion is inhibited by dopamine released from the hypothalamus. After prolactin was isolated from the pituitary gland, blood and amniotic fluid, it was found to exist in several forms with different molecular weights and has structural similarities to growth hormone. Prolactin plays a major role in initiating and sustaining lactation, when its serum concentration is physiologically elevated. Pathological hyperprolactinemia happens in pituitary hyperfunction and renal failure. Hyperprolactinemia causes impaired gonadal function in both sexes. Women may experience menstrual arrest, and men may experience impotence.
