Description of the study
The test requires proper cooperation with the examiner. The subject has a tympanometer probe inserted into the external ear canal, and the initial pressure in the tympanic cavity is measured. The subject simultaneously holds their nose and swallows saliva, creating a negative pressure in the tympanic cavity. The pressure in the ear is then measured again. The subject exhales while simultaneously closing their mouth and holding their nose, creating a positive pressure in the ear. A final pressure measurement is then taken.
The test takes several minutes; the patient may experience mild discomfort in the ear.
