Preparation for the examination
General
- The material for testing is blood.
- The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.
Specific for women
- Blood is collected regardless of the phase of the cycle.
Description
Testosterone is the most important male sex hormone (androgen). It is produced primarily in the testicles. Small amounts are also produced by the adrenal cortex and ovaries. Testosterone is responsible for the development of male sex organs. The importance of this test: in cases of suspected hormonally-related conditions, impotence, decreased libido, or infertility. In women, it is used to diagnose menstrual disorders, decreased libido, and masculine appearance (masculinization). Abnormal values: in diseases of the liver, kidneys, and testicles. Diagnosis and treatment of diseases involving excess or deficiency of this androgen.
