Toxocariasis is one of many parasitic diseases transmitted by animals such as dogs and cats that live with humans. In humans, Toxocara species cause a disease known as larva migrans. Infection most often occurs after swallowing eggs found in dog and cat feces. The larvae hatch in the initial part of the small intestine, which then penetrate the intestinal wall and migrate to the lungs via blood and lymphatic vessels. They spread throughout the body via arterial blood. They leave the capillaries and enter the tissues.
