Description
Toxoplasma gondii is a ubiquitous protozoan that causes infections in all mammalian species. In humans, serological studies have shown that a high percentage of adults are infected with this parasite. The disease is particularly dangerous during pregnancy, as it can be transmitted from the mother to the fetus and cause serious developmental defects.
For this reason, it is important to determine antibody titers before pregnancy. Individuals who lack antibodies should undergo frequent testing to monitor seroconversion. Determining IgA antibodies is particularly important because it allows serological detection of the acute phase of the disease.
NOTE:
According to the RMZ resolution of June 26, 2020, a positive test result obtained in a newborn is subject to mandatory reporting to the PSSE.
