Preparation for the examination
Description
A bone marrow trephine biopsy is a procedure during which a sample of bone marrow with small bone fragments is collected from the iliac crest. This test is performed at the physician's request to diagnose many hematological diseases. The collected material is subjected to histopathological examination. A trephine biopsy can determine the bone marrow's cellularity, its cellular composition, the diagnosis of bone marrow disease, the severity of fibrosis, and the presence of foreign cells (e.g., metastases). The test helps to make a correct diagnosis. The examination is performed with the patient lying on their side. The sample is collected by performing a biopsy of the iliac crest.
The procedure is performed similarly to a bone marrow aspiration biopsy. A different needle is used for the test – a dedicated trephine biopsy needle.
Contraindications:
Active bleeding, low platelet count – at the physician's discretion, abnormal blood clotting test results, taking anticoagulants, or inflammatory lesions around the puncture site.
