Preparation for the examination
General
- The test should always be performed at the same time of day.
- The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.
- The material for testing is blood.
Important
Due to the circadian rhythm of secretion, in order to monitor TSH levels, the test should always be performed at the same time of day, preferably in the morning (the highest peak of secretion).
Description
TSH is a pituitary hormone that stimulates thyroid function
and the production of T3 and T4 in the thyroid gland. The importance of this test: assessing thyroid function.
TSH exhibits significant biological variability related to its circadian rhythm.
It reaches its highest concentrations in the morning, gradually decreasing over time.
The lowest concentrations are observed between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM.
Therefore, TSH tests should be performed in the morning; patients undergoing treatment monitoring are advised to have subsequent tests performed at the same time each day.
Factors that may influence test results:
Samples collected from patients who have received mouse monoclonal antibodies for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes may contain human anti-mouse antibodies (HAMA). These samples may yield falsely elevated or depressed results. Heterophilic antibodies in human serum may react with immunoglobulins contained in the reagents, interfering with the test. Patients who are in regular contact with animals or animal serum-based products may be at risk of this type of interference.
Ordering a test constitutes consent to its performance using the chemiluminescent method.
