Description of the study

Transfontanelle ultrasound allows for the assessment of normal anatomy and intracranial pathology in newborns and infants. This examination requires no preparation of the child and allows for a quick assessment of the morphological status of brain structures and the ventricular system. It is used to detect certain postnatal complications, such as bleeding, impaired cerebrospinal fluid circulation (hydrocephalus), congenital brain defects, and brain tumors, which are rare in newborns and infants.
Ultrasound should be performed on every newborn and infant, especially on premature infants, infants with a head-to-chest circumference disproportion, seizures, and abnormal neurological symptoms, and those with suspected meningitis.
In practice, the examination can be performed on infants up to 6-8 months of age, i.e., until the anterior fontanelle has closed.
The examination takes a few minutes and is painless, non-invasive, and safe. It can be repeated.
