Description of the study
An ultrasound examination is performed through the abdominal wall. During the examination, the tendon center between the rectus abdominis muscles—the linea alba—is assessed. The width of the linea alba and its function during rest, in the supine position, under tension, and in selected positions in which the patient most frequently performs activities. Any pathological changes visible in the area of the linea alba and rectus abdominis muscles, as well as the area around the cesarean section scar and other scars, are also described in the results. During the ultrasound, the examiner demonstrates the behavior of the linea alba during specific movements and instructs on how to modify the movement pattern to prevent problems from worsening (primary and secondary prevention). Examples of movements and exercises are provided. The patient sees how the linea alba function improves and how to address the problem in everyday life. During the examination, if indicated, the semilunar line is also assessed for its function, respiratory pattern, and the presence of pathological changes.
Indications
- The examination is especially recommended for patients after childbirth – optimally not earlier than 3 months after childbirth.
- The test is also recommended for people:
- with suspected rectus abduction,
- with suspected hernia in the area of the linea alba,
- having problems with back pain and constipation,
- those performing strength work or exercises and long periods of sedentary work,
- after abdominal surgery,
- obese,
- with chronic cough,
- with connective tissue failure.
