Preparation

  • The test is performed transvaginally, and the bladder must be emptied for the test.
  • In the case of patients who have not had intercourse, the examination is usually performed through the rectum or possibly through the abdominal integuments, depending on the diagnostic needs and the doctor's decision.
For the transrectal examination, preparation is not mandatory (there is no need for an enema or a proper diet).
For the examination through the abdominal integuments, the bladder should be filled.
  • An ultrasound can be performed on any day of the cycle, unless otherwise indicated by the referring physician.

Description of the study

Gynecological ultrasound is a non-invasive method of detecting pathological changes in the reproductive organs (ovarian cysts, uterine myomas, etc.). The examination is performed with a transvaginal (vaginal) probe or, in the case of women who have not started intercourse, through the rectum or possibly through the abdominal integuments. During the examination, the uterine body, its shape, size and its position in the small pelvis are evaluated. The doctor also assesses the thickness of the endometrium (that is, the mucous membrane of the uterine cavity at its thickest point) and the dimensions of the ovaries.
