Preparation

  • The examination is performed transvaginally, and the urinary bladder must be emptied for the examination.
  • For patients who have not had sexual intercourse, the examination is usually performed through the rectum or alternatively through the abdominal wall, depending on the diagnostic needs and the decision of the examiner.
No preparation is required for the transrectal examination (no enema or diet required).
For the transabdominal examination, the bladder should be full.
  • An ultrasound scan can be performed on any day of the cycle, unless the referring physician has indicated otherwise.

Description of the study

Gynecological ultrasound is a non-invasive method for detecting pathological changes in the reproductive organs (ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, etc.). The examination is performed using a transvaginal probe or, in the case of women who have not initiated sexual intercourse, through the rectum or, alternatively, through the abdominal wall. During the examination, the uterine body, its shape, size, and position in the pelvis are assessed. The thickness of the endometrium (the thickest part of the uterine lining) and the dimensions of the ovaries are also assessed.
