Preparation
- The patient should not take medications that affect the central nervous system (e.g., sedatives, some medications used to treat dizziness) for 48 h before the test.
- The day before the test, you should not drink alcohol.
- The test should be attended at least 4 hours after a meal, as irritation of the vagus during the VNG test triggers symptoms such as dizziness, nystagmus, nausea and sometimes vomiting.
- Women should not have painted eyes (especially eyelashes).
- The result is available 7 working days after the test.
Description of the study
Registration of spontaneous nystagmus is performed in various situations: spontaneous nystagmus, gaze nystagmus, positional nystagmus during repositioning, fixation nystagmus.
Rotational Tests
The diagnosis of dizziness uses the most physiological stimulation for the vestibular organ, which is a change of position by rotational motion with appropriately selected parameters of angular acceleration. The test consists of several rotational and pendulum tests. NIR - rotation-induced nystagmus (bilateral excitation of the vagus). BURST tests- in which the vestibulo-ocular reflex without fixation and with visual fixation, the vestibulo-ocular reflex (with an aperture on the eyes) when performing pendulum movements are evaluated, as well as the carotid-ocular reflex, allowing the evaluation of stimulation from the cervical receptors. The tests examine both vestibules simultaneously and allow us to catch balance system dysfunction and diagnose peripheral, central, or mixed damage.
A full VNG study is a test to diagnose disorders such as:
- Direct damage to the vagus (loss of function),
- mild positional vertigo,
- Menier disease,
- vestibular neuronitis,
- Complications after otitis media,
- motion sickness.
