Preparation for the examination
General
- The material for testing is blood.
- The patient must fast for 12 hours. In the summer, it is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the test.
Important
The WWT test includes determination of iron and transferrin concentrations.
Description
Transferrin concentration has diagnostic value
in combination with iron and ferritin testing, and as a transferrin saturation test (WWT).
Elevated WWT values occur in: iron utilization disorders, hemoglobin synthesis disorders and hemolytic anemias (due to vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency), lead poisoning, and
iron overload (blood transfusions).
Reduced WWT values occur in:
– iron deficiency anemias and infections, chronic inflammations,
– cancer, uremia
, – liver parenchyma damage.
