Preparation for the study

General

  • The test material is blood.
  • The patient does not need to be fasting.About 30 minutes before the test, it is advisable to drink a glass of water or bitter(unsweetened) tea.

Important

The WWT test includes determination of iron and transferrin concentrations.

Description

Transferrin concentration has diagnostic value
in combination with iron, ferritin and transferrin saturation tests (WWT).
Elevated WWT values occur in: iron utilization disorders, hemoglobin synthesis disorders and hemolytic anemias (from vit.B12 and folic acid deficiency), lead poisoning,
iron overload (blood transfusions).
Decreased WWT values occur:
- in iron deficiency anemia and during infections, chronic inflammation,
- in the course of cancer, in uremia
- in liver parenchymal damage.
