Antibodies against Yersinia enterocolitica are detected in the course of a disease called yersiniosis. This zoonotic disease of the gastrointestinal tract typically manifests as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea. Complications of this disease include erythema nodosum—inflammatory lesions of the subcutaneous fat tissue, primarily on the anterior surface of the lower legs—and reactive arthritis, most commonly affecting the large joints of the lower limbs, but also the wrists, fingers, and iliosacral joints. Other complications include immune-mediated lesions: erythema multiforme, iritis, and glomerulonephritis.
