Antibodies against Yersinia enterocolitica are detected in the course of a disease called yersiniosis. This zoonotic disease of the gastrointestinal tract typically manifests as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea. Complications of this disease include erythema nodosum – inflammatory lesions of the subcutaneous fat tissue, primarily on the anterior surface of the lower legs – and reactive arthritis, most often affecting the large joints of the lower limbs, but also the wrists, fingers, and iliosacral joints. Other complications include immune-mediated lesions: erythema multiforme, iritis, and glomerulonephritis.
