Description
Fecal zonulin is a marker associated with intestinal barrier permeability. Zonulin is a protein that regulates tight junctions between intestinal epithelial cells. Increased zonulin levels may indicate increased intestinal permeability, commonly referred to as "leaky gut."
Elevated zonulin levels may occur in the course of:
• inflammatory bowel disease,
• celiac disease,
• food intolerances,
• autoimmune diseases,
• irritable bowel syndrome (IBS),
• metabolic disorders and chronic inflammation.
