What does a visit to a genetics specialist look like?

A genetic counseling appointment begins with a geneticist taking a detailed history of the patient's problems, family history, past illnesses, and congenital defects. The doctor will perform a physical examination, make recommendations for further treatment, and answer the patient's questions.

You can bring your previous test results to your genetic counseling appointment if you have them.

What does a geneticist do?

A geneticist specializes in:

• diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases, such as infertility, cancer, diabetes, dementia and Alzheimer's disease,
• prenatal and postnatal diagnosis,
• determining the probability of the same defects or diseases occurring in subsequent generations.

In addition, a geneticist deals with:

• establishing paternity,
• consulting patients referred by other specialists.
