What does it look like to visit a geneticist specialist?

A visit to a genetic counseling center begins with a genetic specialist taking a detailed history of the patient's problems, family history, past diseases and birth defects. The doctor will perform a physical examination, make recommendations for further treatment, and answer the patient's questions.

The results of previous tests, if the patient has any, can be brought to the genetic counseling appointment.

What does a geneticist do?

Geneticist specializes in:

• Diagnosing and treating genetic diseases, i.e.: infertility, cancer, diabetes, dementia and Alzheimer's disease,
• Prenatal and postnatal diagnostics,
• determining the likelihood of the same defects or conditions in subsequent generations.

In addition, the geneticist deals with:

• establishing paternity,
• Consulting patients referred by other specialists.
