Shoulder pain
The shoulder is a complex joint, and its pain can have many causes, from injury to degenerative disease. Shoulder pain can be concentrated in one area or cause multiple symptoms: it can radiate to the arm and neck, occur only when lifting the arm, or be constant throughout the day or only at night. Shoulder pain can significantly impede daily activities.

Causes of shoulder pain
There are many potential causes of shoulder pain, including:
- Injuries such as sprains, dislocations or fractures.
- Inflammation of tendons, often caused by repetitive movements or overuse.
- Degenerative joint diseases such as osteoarthritis.
- Bursitis, which occurs when a small fluid-filled sac in the shoulder joint becomes inflamed.
- Systemic diseases such as: rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, Lyme disease.
- Neoplastic changes.
Symptoms associated with shoulder pain
Typical symptoms associated with shoulder pain include:
- limitation of joint mobility,
- pain that worsens with movement or at night,
- swelling, redness or warmth in the shoulder area,
- weakness or numbness in the arm,
- chest pain.
Methods of treating the shoulder joint
Treatment for shoulder pain depends on its cause and may include:
- Rest and avoid movements that make the pain worse.
- Applying ice or heat to reduce swelling and pain.
- Painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Physiotherapy to increase range of motion and strengthen muscles.
- In some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary.
When to consult a doctor?
Consultation with a doctor is recommended when:
- shoulder pain is severe or lasts a long time,
- it is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, numbness, weakness,
- the shoulder is deformed or there is limited mobility.
Due to its high mobility, the shoulder joint is often subject to injury. However, shoulder pain can stem from a variety of causes and requires appropriate diagnostic and treatment. Prolonged or severe pain should not be ignored, as it may indicate a more serious problem. Early intervention and appropriate treatment can ensure faster recovery and avoid further complications.
