Description
Using indirect immunofluorescence, antibodies against striated muscle can be detected. They react with both skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle. The presence of these antibodies serves as an additional parameter in the diagnosis of Myasthenia gravis (only high titers have diagnostic significance in this disease). Myasthenia gravis is a generalized autoimmune disease caused by disorders of neuromuscular conduction due to reversible
blockade of acetylcholine receptors on the motor plate. Typical symptoms of the disease are load-dependent muscle fatigue, especially in the musculature of the eyes, face, esophagus and limbs. Complications include paralysis of swallowing and respiratory muscle function.
Antibodies against striated muscles are also detected in the serum of patients with various myopathies and in patients with Chagas disease in the chronic stage.
