Orthodontics specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of malocclusions and dental irregularities. Orthodontic appliances correct gaps between teeth, crowded teeth, underdeveloped jaws, and other malocclusions. It doesn't matter how old you are—any age is a good age to treat a malocclusion.
Modern orthodontics offers various types of appliances:
- Fixed braces – Used for both children and adults. Braces are fitted by bonding metal or cosmetic brackets to the teeth. Follow-up visits are required every 4-5 weeks. The dentist then checks the alignment of the teeth and activates the braces.
- Ceramic braces – for aesthetic reasons, patients now have the option of choosing brackets and archwires that are less visible. The color matches the natural color of the teeth, making them less noticeable than metal braces.
- Corrective braces (removable) – most often recommended for children aged 6 to 12. Wearing them improves the alignment of the teeth and jaws, widening the dental arches, and preparing space for permanent teeth. The effectiveness of such treatment depends on the cooperation of the child and parents with the dentist.
