Diabetes in pregnancy
It is the most common metabolic disorder that complicates pregnancy. It can cause complications during labor and lead to birth defects in the fetus. It occurs in previously healthy women who usually do not suspect the threat.
Diabetes affects approximately 5% of pregnant women, and despite ongoing advances in diagnostics and treatment, it remains a serious problem. It can cause miscarriage, premature birth, and polyhydramnios. In newborns, it causes defects in the heart, kidneys, and central nervous system. It is a major cause of perinatal mortality.
Women who have given birth multiple times, women over 35, and those who have had diabetes in previous pregnancies are particularly at risk of gestational diabetes. Carbohydrate metabolism disorders are more common in obese women and those who have previously given birth to babies weighing more than 4 kg.
Glucose tolerance test
Gestational diabetes can be easily detected and its consequences can be prevented early. At the first doctor's visit, once pregnancy is confirmed, the patient receives a special pregnancy booklet with detailed tests. Initially, she must have her blood glucose level checked on a fasting day. Additionally, a monthly urine test is performed, which also detects the presence of sugar.
Between weeks 24 and 28 of pregnancy, an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) should be performed. Blood sugar levels are measured first on an empty stomach and then after oral glucose ingestion. If the test result is abnormal, the expectant mother will be referred to a diabetes clinic.
Under the supervision of a specialist
With responsible cooperation with your doctor, nothing bad should happen. Under the care of a diabetologist, you'll need to follow a proper diet and learn how to check your blood sugar level with a glucometer. Even if, in addition to the diet, insulin is required, the expectant mother will certainly endure it bravely for the sake of her baby.
Pregnancy in women who already have diabetes is a separate issue. For the health of both mother and baby, pregnancy must be carefully planned. A prior consultation with a diabetologist and a thorough discussion of the procedure is essential.
