Halitosis, or unpleasant breath. What is it and how can it be treated?
Halitosis is a rather troublesome condition. Bad breath causes significant discomfort for many people, and it's estimated that up to 25% of people worldwide may be affected by the problem. It's often associated with poor oral hygiene, but it can also indicate serious health problems. We speak with dentist Kinga Bizior .
Let's start with the causes. Why do so many people struggle with bad breath?
There are many causes of halitosis. The most common include poor oral hygiene, food debris (e.g., around braces or under dentures), unremoved tongue coating, plaque buildup, and tooth decay.
Halitosis can also be caused by oral diseases, such as gingivitis, periodontitis, periodontitis, ulcers and fistulas, and fungal infections. Sinusitis or tonsillitis can also cause these symptoms. Additionally, conditions such as liver failure, gastroesophageal reflux disease, intestinal diseases, and cancers of the digestive or respiratory systems can also cause bad breath.
Other causes include smoking cigarettes or taking certain medications, such as antidepressants or diuretics. It's also important to note that the body produces less saliva during sleep, which is why some patients experience bad breath immediately upon waking.
Symptoms such as persistent bad breath should be discussed with a doctor, as they may indicate various medical conditions. Appropriate diagnosis and treatment can often effectively eliminate the problem and prevent its recurrence. Early diagnosis increases the chances of rapid and effective treatment.
How does unpleasant breath odor occur?
Odor is caused by volatile sulfur compounds , which are produced by anaerobic bacteria. They enter the oral cavity through ingested food and typically lodge on the back of the tongue. Halitosis is also caused by bacteria present in dental calculus. Furthermore, plaque, which forms after every meal, secretes acidic substances that damage enamel and lead to various periodontal diseases. It's important to remember that people with certain medical conditions may experience characteristic breath odors, such as fruity odors in diabetes, ammonia in kidney problems, or sour odors in asthma.
How can halitosis be diagnosed?
The first step you should take is a visit to the dentist . If you visit the dentist regularly, there's a good chance 'll avoid this problem. This allows your dentist to regularly monitor your teeth and oral cavity and spot the first signs of halitosis. If your dentist can't find the cause, it's a good idea to consult your family doctor or a specialist —a gastroenterologist, otolaryngologist, or internist—who will begin the diagnostic process.
For halitosis and other abdominal symptoms, a hydrogen breath test . Its purpose is to rule out or confirm small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) , which can also cause similar symptoms. The test involves measuring the gas produced by bacteria in response to a specific amount of sugar they digest, administered at the beginning of the test. This test is painless but requires appropriate patient preparation. It can be performed at the Luxmed Medical Center in Lublin, at Zwycięska Street 6a.
Halitosis . So where should you begin treatment?
Above all, it's important to pay attention to oral hygiene . Remember to brush your teeth thoroughly and regularly, preferably after every meal, and use dental floss, mouthwash, and irrigators. People suffering from halitosis should first consult a dentist to assess the condition of their mouth and teeth. Often, instruction in proper oral hygiene and professional teeth cleaning are sufficient. If these treatments don't help, it's worth seeing a specialist to diagnose other causes of bad breath. Smokers should limit, or ideally, quit. Eating foods that have cleansing properties, increase saliva production, and regulate the pH of the oral cavity can be helpful. I'm referring to fruits and vegetables, such as apples, carrots, and sugar-free chewing gum. Treating halitosis often involves doctors with various specialties.
